This tenure-track professor position is supported financially through the German Federal and State Governments’ tenure-track program to promote the careers of researchers early on. Applications from researchers who have just completed their doctoral degree and are in the early phase of their career are strongly encouraged.

The successful applicant will assume responsiblilities in research and teaching in the field mentioned above.

Appointment requirements are governed by Article 102a of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

The candidate should hold an excellent PhD in economics and possess academic expertise with regard to Latin America in one or more of the following fields linked to development economics: Institutional or behavioral economics, research in inequality or migration, or economic and social policies, environmental policy, monetary and exchange rate policies. The candidate should be able to demonstrate a record of successful academic teaching at the university level as well as excellent research output, preferably in an international context. The applicant should have experience with third-party funded research projects as well as with interdisciplinary collaboration. Their language skills in English, and in Spanish (or Portuguese) should be excellent. It is desirable to have basic knowledge of the German language.


Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

The new professor will teach and supervise students at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level at Freie Universität’s Institute for Latin American Studies (LAI) as well as at the School of Business and Economics. Teaching and supervision will be conducted in German, English, and Spanish/Portuguese. They are expected to contribute to at least one of the LAI’s thematic research areas, such as “Interdependent Inequalities” or “Monetary Spaces and Interdependencies.” The candidate will also participate in one interdisciplinary collaborative research project. Additionally, we expect the new professor to publish their research in highly ranked, internationally recognized professional journals and engage in the acquisition of third-party funding. The new professor will also be expected to address gender and diversity issues as part of their research and teaching. They should also be prepared reach German language proficiency of at least C1-level (CEFR) by the time of their tenure review.

The position entails a three-year appointment as a civil servant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beamtin auf Zeit”). Pending a successful review process, the position can be extended for another three years. If the appointee successfully passes the tenure review, they will be appointed to a permanent professorship. The permanent appointment will not be advertised as a separate position. As part of this process, performance goals will be negotiated at the time the junior professor is hired. The fulfillment of those goals will be assessed as part of the tenure review (Article 102 c of the Berlin Higher Education Act, § 102 c BerlHG).

The performance goals to be determined will basically deal with the following areas:

• Research
• Teaching
• Promoting early-career researchers
• Academic committee work
• Leadership and management
• Language proficiency

At the time of appointment to the permanent professorship, all the general regulations and conditions regarding public sector employment must be fulfilled.

In addition, any candidates who completed their doctoral degree at Freie Universität Berlin and/or have Freie Universität Berlin as their primary employer must comply with the regulations stipulated by the Berlin Higher Education Act, Article102 c, paragraph 3.
