Responsibilities

Environmental Defense Fund has a proud record of helping achieve environmental outcomes that are economically efficient, environmentally effective, and fair. Our advocacy is informed by the best science and economics, we typically engage in partnerships (academia, business, communities, government, other environmental non-governmental organizations) and we are pragmatic in finding the ways that work to make progress. As regards the application of economics, our tradition and practice is to favor market-led approaches where feasible, and in general to ensure that our advocacy advances both human wellbeing and environmental ambition, achieving environmental outcomes while enabling continuing innovation and enterprise development.

Overall Function

EDF's Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) is looking for an excellent postdoc economist dedicated to deepening the economic underpinnings of our advocacy in ways that are rigorous, evidence-based, effective and stand up to peer review. We are looking for a postdoc economist that can support us in any of the following areas: Climate cooperation, Climate mitigation policy (including transitions to net-zero emissions, pricing, and methane reduction from fuel production), Energy markets, Air Quality, Transport and environment, Climate resilience (including coastal and agriculture), and Freshwater resources.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position will be based partially on the Fellow's area(s) of focus and how that ties into EDF's economics work. The responsibilities will include but may not be limited to:
•Perform original research on topics relevant to EDF's advocacy, for publication;
•Monitor the peer-reviewed literature, and to synthesize and disseminate relevant information for EDF economists, scientists, lawyers and policy specialists.
•Participate in the development or refinement of EDF's policy positions based on the Fellow's research, analysis and knowledge of peer-reviewed literature.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:
•Hold a recent Ph.D. in economics, or a related area such as public policy, with a strong emphasis on environment or resources issues.
•It is preferable, but not required, that the Fellow's degree is from Princeton University.
•Enthusiasm for applying rigorous economics to advance environmental objectives.
•Enjoy working with multidisciplinary teams that have a shared objective.

Term

The Fellowship term is 24 months

Location

This Fellow may be based out of Boston, MA, New York, NY or Washington, D.C.
