The Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) anticipates job openings for economists at all levels of seniority. OCE offers an excellent environment for empirically-oriented economists who are interested in both research and policy related to intellectual property. Our economists provide guidance on USPTO initiatives, policy analysis, and original research on the impacts of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets in both the domestic and international environments.

OCE maintains a working paper series, a seminar series, and cohosts an annual innovation conference. USPTO’s economists regularly present their work at conferences, and publish in leading journals. Economists with data and analytical experience related to patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets who write and communicate effectively and have a strong comprehension of microeconomic analysis are encouraged to apply.

Interested economists may discuss these opportunities at the AEA meetings in San Diego or at the USPTO headquarters in Alexandria, VA. USPTO representatives will be attending the AEA meetings and are available for a limited number of informational meetings with prospective candidates. To express interest or set up an informational meeting in San Diego, please submit a letter of interest and a resume to economics@uspto.gov.
