The FDA seeks to fill the position of Chief Economist. The FDA’s Economics Staff has the responsibility for economic analyses involving human and animal drugs, medical and radiological devices, biological products, tobacco, and food safety and nutrition. The Chief Economist is the FDA lead on all matters that directly or indirectly involve economic analysis. The Chief Economist assesses the economics of Agency actions and policies and communicates these finding to management. The Chief Economist is responsible for ensuring that economic analyses of all FDA proposed and final regulations comply with executive orders governing regulations, all relevant directives and requirements from the Office of Management and Budget (including OMB guidance on Economic Analysis), and statutes requiring economic analysis of regulatory actions. The Chief Economist serves as the Agency’s principal representative to interagency organizations and working groups involving the use of economic science by regulatory agencies.

Applicants must possess, at a minimum, a Ph.D. in economics with several years of experience as an economic scientist.
This position requires U.S. citizenship.

The successful candidate is expected to have or obtain a high-risk public trust security clearance.
