The Chief of the Demographic Research Unit is the state’s recognized demographics expert, and oversees California’s official population estimates and projections that determine how educational and other funds are budgeted. As a member of the management team for the Department of Finance, the Chief has substantial autonomy in developing population methodologies and analysis required for research, budgeting, and planning purposes by researchers and firms in California, as well as the federal, state, and local governments. This position manages a professional staff of 14 and sets the demographic research agenda to improve the state’s understanding of population dynamics.

A key responsibility will be preparing for the 2020 Census. This includes working with partners at the Census Bureau, state government, and in research institutions. In particular, the Chief will direct the update of the state’s estimation and projection methodologies to incorporate the census benchmark and state administrative data. The position works closely with economic and revenue unit staff to ensure that forecasting assumptions are as accurate as possible. The Chief also assists the media in understanding the changing nature of demography in California, and how it fits within the U.S. and world demography. Applications are due October 24, 2018.
