CBO, a nonpartisan agency that provides Congress with the objective, timely analyses needed for economic and budgetary decisions, seeks both new and experienced economists, PhD and Master’s level, who have a broad range of policy interests. Positions require excellent quantitative skills, strong writing ability, and an interest in working on issues of current legislative priorities to the Congress.

Health Economists to contribute to a variety of projects and analyses in the health area. Ongoing work includes further analyses related to the Affordable Care Act and studies on a broad range of topics, including drivers of private insurance premiums, factors affecting the supply and prices of medical care, and the effects of policies to address obesity on health care spending.

Labor Economists one with expertise in immigration policy and a second to conduct research and analysis on labor markets, income, poverty, cash and in-kind assistance programs, disability policies and education and training.

Applied Microeconomist/Modeler one to analyze policy issues in Social Security, federal health programs, and the long-term federal budget and a second to work on analysis of the distribution of income.

Tax Economist to conduct economic analysis and write CBO studies on a wide variety of federal tax policy issues. This analysis might include empirical research, development of microsimulation and other models, and projecting federal revenues.

Applied Microeconomist/Market Design to analyze the design and implementation of the market and institutional mechanisms used by the federal government to sell financial securities, carbon permits, and other assets.

Financial Modeler to develop models that estimate the cost of credit and insurance programs and to forecast financial variables such as stock prices, interest rates, and housing-market variables.

CBO analysts address challenging substantive issues in economics and public policy while working in a collegial environment that provide opportunities for research on numerous topics relevant to the agency’s endeavors. They are encouraged to pursue independent research projects related to CBO’s broad mission and present this work at conferences and publish it in peer-reviewed journals.

Staff construct and improve cutting-edge models that underlie CBO's policy analyses and prepare longer-term CBO studies, shorter-term memoranda, and testimonies.
