Full Text of JOE Listing:

The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic & Social Research at the University of Melbourne seeks a number of enthusiastic, motivated economists with research expertise in applied economic and social research.

We are seeking to fill two positions working in the ‘Health and Healthcare’ theme with individuals with research interests and experience in the financing and organisation of healthcare systems. In particular, those with experience in undertaking research on the behaviour of healthcare providers, the role of financial incentives for providers and patients, health insurance, and competition in healthcare are encouraged to apply. These positions would suit individuals with a background in industrial organisation, labour economics, or health economics.

The Research Fellow (Level B) positions would suit someone who is about to complete their PhD or has recently completed their PhD (within 3-5 years). Candidates should possess strong applied econometric skills (especially as applied to the analysis of longitudinal survey data, working with cross-section and panel administrative data, and/or working on field experiments) with evidence of or the potential to publish in leading general and field-specific economics journals. Applicants should also have a genuine interest in engaging in policy-relevant research and in disseminating this research to a broad range of audiences. To be considered for a Senior Research Fellow (Level C) position, applicants should have three to six years of experience in an academic environment, have a strong track record of publication in high quality journals, and show evidence of their ability to engage with policy makers and engage in public debate.

The Melbourne Institute has an outstanding and dynamic research environment, supported by access to high quality survey and administrative data, opportunities to run field experiments and engage in primary data collection. The Melbourne Institute operates as a department within the Faculty of Business and Economics and is considered the pre-eminent applied economic and social research institute in Australia for the study of micro and macroeconomic issues. The Institute maintains a collegial and co-operative culture that expects academic excellence as well the development of policy-relevant research activities that may lead to better policies and practices. The University of Melbourne is ranked number one in Australia, and the city of Melbourne is consistently ranked by the Economist as the most liveable city in the world.

These positions have been identified as three-year fixed term positions with the possibility of renewal and promotion conditional on performance of the candidate and funding. All applications should include a cover letter, a C.V., a job-market paper, and letters of reference if available.
