Full Text of JOE Listing:

The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research invites nominations and applications for the position of President.

The Upjohn Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization devoted to finding and promoting solutions to unemployment and related challenges. Since its founding in 1932, the Institute has developed into one of the world’s leading independent labor research organizations, seeking to understand the causes of unemployment and develop strategies and solutions to alleviate its effects. In addition to the research division, the Institute houses several groups that administer workforce programs and devise regional economic development strategies. Recently, the Institute has charted an expanded and impactful course for its work. This undertaking offers significant opportunities for leadership to further leverage the Institute’s substantial resources and capabilities.

Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the President serves as chief executive officer of the Institute. The President is charged with ensuring an excellent research program and enhancing the visibility and impact of the Institute with policymakers, practitioners, the academic community, quality media, and the public. S/he will lead the continued visioning, strategy, and implementation for the next phase of the Institute’s development. To achieve this end, the next President will nurture and develop relationships with foundation partners, research and policy institutes, and colleges and universities to leverage the Institute’s commitment to providing impactful, high-quality research, policy insights, and experimentation.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with research colleagues and directing research programs; institutional leadership skills; and a track record of productive partnerships and alliances. The next President is likely to hold a Ph.D. in economics, political science, sociology, or a related field and is expected to be an influential public voice on matters in the Institute’s domain of expertise. This individual will be a strategic thinker and effective communicator, ensure quality execution, and have strong interpersonal skills. As an inspirational leader, the next President of the Upjohn Institute will have the ability and desire to both shape and disseminate the Institute’s work for maximum impact.
