Position Summary:

The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Endowed Professor in Actuarial Sciences and Risk Management will provide leadership in actuarial science and risk management education for the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the University of Alabama. The Dai-ichi Professor will assist in leading the College’s actuarial science academic programs.

The Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies at The University of Alabama is seeking candidates for the position of Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Endowed Professor in Actuarial Sciences and Risk Management. The Dai-ichi Professor will provide leadership in insurance research and education for the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the University of Alabama. The Dai-ichi Professor will assist in leading the College’s actuarial science academic programs. The Dai-ichi Professor will teach courses at the undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral level in the areas of risk management, actuarial science, insurance, quantitative finance, and related fields.
This is a renewable, non-tenure earning position appointed at the assistant or associate professor level. The primary focus of the position will be teaching and engaging in service activities intended to support the College’s actuarial science academic programs (e.g., working with student groups, cultivating industry relationships). Some time will be dedicated to research, depending on the candidate’s qualifications.
Successful candidates must hold a doctoral degree in finance, economics, statistics, or a closely related field and industry experience in actuarial science or a related field. The appointment will be made at either the assistant or associate professor level, depending on the candidate’s experience and record. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Appointment is effective August 16, 2018.

The Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies offers degrees at the undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. levels. The department offers undergraduate specializations in insurance and risk management and actuarial science. The Masters programs include a full-time MBA, a weekend MBA program for executives, and a one-year MSF. The department offers an excellent research environment including generous travel support, an active seminar series, and Ph.D. graduate student research assistants.
The College has state-of-the art facilities for research and teaching, including multimedia classrooms, subscriptions to WRDS and an excellent collection of databases. The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, a city of about 100,000 people, located an hour’s drive from Birmingham (a metropolitan area with about 1 million people).
