Position Summary:

The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Endowed Professor in Actuarial Sciences and Risk Management will provide leadership in actuarial science and risk management research and education for the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the University of Alabama. The Dai-ichi Professor will maintain a nationally recognized level of research scholarship with publications in top-tier finance, insurance, economics, actuarial science, and risk management journals.

The Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies at The University of Alabama is seeking candidates for the position of Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Endowed Professor in Actuarial Sciences and Risk Management. The Dai-ichi Professor will provide leadership in insurance research and education for the Culverhouse College of Commerce and the University of Alabama. The Dai-ichi Professor is expected to maintain a nationally-recognized level of research scholarship with publications in top-tier journals and work closely with graduate students and other faculty members in the department and college. The Dai-ichi Professor will teach courses at the undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral level in the areas of risk management, actuarial science, insurance, quantitative finance, and related fields.

Successful candidates must hold an earned doctorate in finance, economics, statistics, or a closely related field and have a research and teaching record consistent with a tenured associate or full professor at a major flagship university. Candidates with a record of externally-funded research (e.g., grant funding) are strongly preferred. We are particularly interested in candidates that can work collaboratively with faculty and graduate students to enhance our research programs.

The appointment will be made at either the associate or full professor level, depending on the candidate’s experience and record. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications, including research and travel support and a reduced teaching load.

Appointment is effective August 16, 2018.

The Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies offers degrees at the undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. levels. The department offers undergraduate specializations in insurance and risk management and actuarial science. The Masters programs include a full-time MBA, a weekend MBA program for executives, and a one-year MSF. The department offers an excellent research environment including generous travel support, an active seminar series, and Ph.D. graduate student research assistants.

The College has state-of-the art facilities for research and teaching, including multimedia classrooms, subscriptions to WRDS and an excellent collection of databases. The University of Alabama is located in Tuscaloosa, a city of about 100,000 people, located an hour’s drive from Birmingham (a metropolitan area with about 1 million people).
