The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC is seeking experienced researchers to fill a visiting economist positions in the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA). The selected candidates will spend a year working in DERA’s Office of Litigation Economics (OLE) to help analyze economic issues and questions that arise in the context of SEC enforcement matters.

Opportunities exist within the OLE to focus on work in support of a broad range of litigation and investigation-related activities and matters. Candidates should demonstrate expertise relevant to or have significant experience (typically five or more years) in at least one of the following areas: (1) market microstructure (including issues related to the structure and liquidity of equity, option, or fixed income markets); (2) mutual funds, private funds, or investment advisers; (3) corporate finance and financial accounting; (4) asset pricing and structured products. Candidates must demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge to the Agency’s mission of protecting investors, facilitating capital formation, and ensuring fair and orderly markets.

Job Description:
Visiting Scholars at the Commission join a community of nearly 80 Ph.D. trained staff who provide economic guidance and research expertise to a broad range of activities, including rule-making, enforcement actions, market oversight and monitoring, and other regulatory initiatives. Candidates must have the ability to apply academic research and empirical methods in support of Commission actions and regulatory programs, and are expected to engage in independent research directed at top-tier professional journals.

Visiting Academics: DERA uses the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) Mobility Program to bring in talented academics as Visiting Academics, typically for one-year appointments with possible extension another year if DERA and the home organization approve.

Job Qualifications:
• Education: A Ph.D. in economics, finance, accounting, mathematics, statistics, or similarly quantitative field.
• Experience: evidence of a strong research background in the evaluation and interpretation of economic information.
• Must have, and retain, a permanent position at a U.S. college or university.

Terms, Compensation And Benefits:
Visiting Scholars are compensated pursuant to the Intergovernmental Personnel Act contract, whereby professors are detailed to the government but remain employed by their universities, which are reimbursed for the academic salary and benefits. Visiting academics may be reimbursed for moving expenses.
