The RAND Corporation, a global leader in public policy research, is seeking a recognized scholar and dynamic leader to fill its newly endowed Tang Chair in China Policy Studies. Created by a generous endowment by the Tang Foundation, the Tang Chairholder will undertake research on the critical factors that will influence China’s future, particularly in education and/or health.

The holder of the Tang Chair will develop and manage a research agenda on China’s policies for sustainable growth, build partnerships with research institutes in China to organize symposia, exchange programs, and joint research projects, and mentor China studies scholars at RAND. The endowment from the Tang Foundation will significantly, but not entirely, fund the position. To supplement the support provided by the endowment, as well as to establish a flourishing program of China policy studies at RAND, the Chair will be required to develop a program of externally-funded research at RAND. The opportunity is open to scholars of China’s education policies and/or health policies.

The Chair will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across disciplines with RAND researchers in fields such as economics, engineering, international relations, law, natural sciences, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics. This multidisciplinary approach to research and analysis is a hallmark of RAND research.

Qualifications:

All research positions at RAND require excellent analytic skills, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing; the ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team; and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity. In addition, the Chair is expected to have a strong relevant research record and will be expected to mentor junior analysts at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, and will have the opportunity to teach.

Education

• Ph.D. in public policy, education or health field
• Ph.D. in adjacent fields* with relevant experience in education or health, or M.D. with relevant policy research experience also qualifies

* fields in which public policy research relevant to education or health has been undertaken, and includes fields such as demography, economics, political science, and sociology.

Experience:

Applicants with a minimum of 10 years in an academic or non-academic research setting preferred. The successful candidate will have proven program management experience. Experience that includes initiating and developing China studies programming, fund-raising, and outreach desirable.

Location:
Santa Monica CA or Washington DC (preferred).
