The Department of Economics (http://economics.ucsd.edu) and the Urban Studies and Planning (USP) Program (http://usp.ucsd.edu) within the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego announce a joint search for an outstanding scholar, at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track). The appointment will be based in the Department of Economics with the expectation that the successful candidate will contribute substantially to the growth of USP and its new major in Real Estate and Development. UC San Diego has an ambitious plan to conduct top-level research and develop an innovative and comprehensive curriculum in real estate and development. The Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego has a long tradition of interdisciplinary scholarship that enhances the capacity of regions to support socially equitable and ecologically sustainable development, and the new track in real estate and development will continue this trajectory. Relevant areas of expertise include urban economics, public economics (i.e., taxation), finance and political economy.

Candidates must show potential for achieving significant results in original research, possess strong teaching skills, and have a PhD in Economics or a related field by September 1, 2018; applicants currently in a doctoral program must have advanced to candidacy prior to any potential offer of employment. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated strong leadership or a commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in an academic setting. Applied work in the practice of real estate and development, urban planning, public finance, or other related fields will be viewed favorably. Candidates should be able to engage in team teaching with scholars and practitioners from different disciplinary backgrounds including economics, urban studies and planning and other social sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate students in economics and real estate and development as well as Ph.D. students in economics.

Candidates must provide vita, three original letters of reference (sent under separate cover), and a sample of the applicant’s work.
