CBO, a nonpartisan agency that provides Congress with objective, timely analyses for economic and budgetary decisions, seeks new and experienced economists who have a broad range of policy interests. Positions require excellent quantitative skills, strong writing ability, and an interest in working on issues of current legislative interest to the Congress.

Health Economists preferably with strong modeling skills, to contribute to a variety of projects and analyses in the health area that inform federal health policy. Research areas of particular interest include the performance of health care markets, health care cost growth, and Medicaid spending trends and projections. Ongoing work includes analyses of the effects of the Affordable Care Act, studies of the drivers of health insurance premiums, studies relating to the supply and price of health care services, and further analyses of competitive models for Medicare.

Financial Economist to conduct analyses to evaluate the costs of federal financial activities and contributing to CBO’s recurring projections for the economy and the budget. A focus of the division’s work is to evaluate the costs, risks, and economic and budgetary consequences of a wide range of federal financial obligations, including loans and loan guarantees, deposit insurance, pension guarantees, and mortgage guarantees.

Assistant Director, the senior executive position responsible for managing and directing the Macroeconomic Analysis Division which monitors economic conditions, prepares CBO’s economic forecast, and conducts analyses of the effects of fiscal policy on the economy and on the federal budget.

Macroeconomist with interests that include public finance and fiscal policy, to construct, improve and use cutting-edge models that underlie CBO’s short-term and long-term economic projections; analyze current economic developments; conduct policy analysis; and analyze and write studies discussing trends in the economy.

Microeconomist with training or experience in applied industrial organization, market design, or a related field of microeconomics to assess the effect of various forms of federal involvement in markets for goods and services.

CBO analysts address challenging issues in economics and public policy in a collegial environment that provides opportunities for research on numerous topics relevant to the agency’s endeavors. Economists construct and improve cutting-edge models that underlie CBO's policy analyses and prepare CBO studies, memoranda, and testimonies. They are encouraged to pursue independent research projects related to CBO’s broad mission and present this work at conferences and publish it in peer-reviewed journals.

CBO may consider permanent residents. CBO will interview at the AEA Meetings in San Francisco.
