The Joint Committee on Taxation (the “JCT”) has an opening for a staff economist. The JCT is a nonpartisan professional staff, comprised of lawyers, economists, certified public accountants, and computer specialists, that provides Congress with unbiased analysis of tax legislation. The staff of the JCT works closely with the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Finance and is involved in every aspect of the tax legislative process. The JCT is seeking a staff economist to provide policy and technical advice to Members of Congress, Congressional committees, and respective staff. Staff economists work with Members of Congress and staff in the development of tax proposals, and provide explanation and analysis of tax proposals, both orally in informal meetings and in formal written reports, such as the preparation of background materials for Congressional hearings and markups of tax legislation. This is an exciting and challenging position for economists who have an interest in tax policy. Your work will be reflected immediately in tax legislation considered by the Congress. You will work in an informal team environment with other staff economists and lawyers in analyzing tax legislation. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, with training in public finance and taxation preferred. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
