The Department of Economics seeks to appoint an experienced economist as the Director of the Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics (RSQE). RSQE–founded by Lawrence Klein in 1952–publishes forecasts of the US and Michigan economies, advises university and government officials, participates in revenue estimation for the State of Michigan, and informs the public about economic issues facing the state. The person selected for this position may also hold a research and/or instructional appointment at the university. The Director of RSQE provides leadership for using macroeconomic models to develop a comprehensive forecast and analysis of GDP and its major components, as well as related variables such as unemployment, tax revenue, with a focus on the Michigan economy. The Director reports periodically to the Governor, the State Legislature and the State Department of Treasury, and participates in Michigan's consensus revenue estimating conference. He or she also advises the University's executive leadership on economic issues. The Director of RSQE has the primary responsibility for recruiting, retaining, and interacting with RSQE's research scientists. This position involves the management of a small staff. Applicants must hold an advanced degree in economics or related field of study, with knowledge of statistical methodologies and economic forecasting, as well as outstanding communication skills, both oral and written. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in economics, demonstrated scholarship in the form of publications in the fields of economics, statistics and quantitative methods and management experience.
