The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) invites applications for the position of Economist to join the Office of the Chief Economist (OCE). We welcome applications from recent PhDs as well as from candidates with several years of professional experience.

Background
OCE consists of a team of around 45 economists and analysts. It contributes to the operational, policy and strategy work of the Bank and provides intellectual leadership on economic and financial aspects of transition in the region. Within OCE, the Research Pillar is responsible for conducting peer-reviewed research on critical economic issues relevant to the transition region and EBRD operations, macroeconomic analysis in support of OCE’s country work, and relations with academia. It also leads the design and implementation of large-scale surveys (such as the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey, the Banking Environment and Performance Survey, and the Life in Transition Survey); randomised impact studies; and the production of most major external publications produced by the OCE, including the annual Transition Report. Research findings are published in EBRD’s Working Paper series and leading economics journals.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
The successful candidate is expected to undertake, present, and publish high-quality academic research as well as disseminating findings through attendance at lectures and conferences. He/she is expected to establish and maintain strong links with the rest of the OCE, the Bank, and outside academics, and to provide intellectual support within OCE by taking part in project or country related discussions. He/she is also expected to contribute to the generation of key products of the pillar, for example chapters in the Transition Report or occasional sector- or country-specific reports.

Essential Skills and Qualifications
- A PhD in economics from a major university.
- A track record of research in fields relevant to EBRD, in the form of a very strong thesis in areas such as development economics, industrial organisation, international trade, economic growth, labour economics, environmental economics, or corporate finance.
- Proven ability to independently undertake theoretical and empirical analysis and relate research to policy and operational issues pertinent to the Bank.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, at the standard required for professional publication, official documents and official representation.
