The Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies (IMES) of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), Japanese central bank, is interested in hiring Ph.D.s in economics. The IMES expects candidates to carry out high-quality research in the fields of macroeconomics, monetary economics, finance, international economics, and econometrics. The IMES encourages academic research as its primary duty while some policy-related research may be required for in-house purposes. The IMES offers salary and benefits competitive with that of an academic position. Although many research papers are written in English, the main working language at the IMES is Japanese; therefore, excellent Japanese speaking, reading, and writing skills are required.

Application Instructions:
Prospective Ph.D. applicants should send a CV, recent research papers, and three letters of reference to imeskoubo@boj.or.jp by December 5. We will be interviewing selected candidates at the Annual AEA meeting in Boston. Experienced applicants should also send a research proposal to the IMES. The proposal needs to explain the relevance of the project on monetary policy or financial stability, with a detailed abstract of a paper publishable in the Japanese IMES journal within a year.
