JOE is a service of the American Economic Association.
"All members of the American Economic Association have a professional obligation to list their job openings in JOE. Employers are urged by the American Economic Association to allow sufficient time (30 days) for applicant response from the time of publication in JOE to the time the position is filled." (Minutes of the Annual Meeting, December 29, 1974, American Economic Review, May 1975, p. 443.)
The American Economic Association does not endorse any form of discrimination in hiring economists.
Listings may encourage or welcome applications from either: (a) identifiable underrepresented groups, or (b) identifiable groups for which the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other applicable laws permit preferences in hiring. However, listings may not include language that indicates discriminatory preferences in hiring.
Employers who submit listings to JOE that welcome or encourage applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, sexual preference, or physical handicap must certify or have a certification on file at the American Economic Association specifying that the language in the listing is in compliance with relevant U.S. laws, orders, and regulations concerning equal opportunity and affirmative action. "The Association will not knowingly publish paid or unpaid advertising or notices for products, services, or positions that are made available in a fashion that discriminates on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, sexual preference, or physical handicap." Listings that indicate discriminatory preferences in hiring are not permitted even if the employer is eligible to do so by law.
Foreign universities are not subject to U.S. laws and regulations concerning
