|Description:||Conference "The Evolution of Integration in Europe. 20 Years after the fall off the Berlin Wall"|
|Location:||Allendorf a.d. Eder, Viessmann Academy, Viessmann Corporation, Germany|
|Subject:||The transformation of Europe since the collapse of the Berlin Wall has been phenomenal. Europe is rapidly becoming whole again. Great strides are made in the economic and political spheres, in particular through the expansion of the European Union (EU) into the former socialist countries. Trade and tourists flow freely between the former Iron Curtain countries, the rest of Europe, and the world. However, cultural and labour mobility is still somewhat constrained, as are social, political and defence integration efforts. But, how will defence integration effect Europe's relations with non-European NATO countries? Where Europe goes from here, however, remains unclear. Attempts at creating a European constitution have failed, and the recent rejection of the Lisbon Treaty by Irish voters has slowed integration efforts. In addition, important questions remain concerning whether EU expansion into the Balkans and Turkey is politically feasible. The big question, almost 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall remains whether the process is going to lead to the integration of states and regions or the formation of only a free trade zone? Can commerce move forward but social, political, or cultural change not? We are soliciting papers from different disciplines that address these various issues.
