|Description:||PEGNet Conference 2011 "Poor Countries, Poor People, and the New Global Players"|
|Location:||Hamburg, GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies, Germany|
|Subject:||The central theme of the conference will be the consequences of and the lessons to be learnt from the economic and political rise of new global actors, including countries like China and India. The resulting power shifts and the strengthening of interactions between developing countries have impacted and will impact on the poor worldwide. Another group of new global players of interest are private donor organisations. One open question is whether the economic and social successes of some countries can be replicated in other contexts. More generally, a core objective of the conference is to identify policies to reduce poverty and promote equity and growth in the context of this new global economic order. We are particularly interested in high-quality papers as well as innovative projects that generate new insights for example on the effects of trade and investment flows from rising powers to developing countries and the role of the former and philanthropic organisations in the aid system. In addition, we are looking forward to receiving contributions on emerging economic and political powers themselves, in particular with a focus on poverty, equity and social cohesion in those countries. More general contributions to PEGNetňďs core theme, i.e. the nexus between poverty, inequality, and growth, are also welcome.
