Full Text of JOE Listing:
The Integrated Assessment Modeling (IAM) group at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, seeks an economic modeler to play a central role in the development and application of the economic component of our modeling framework for assessing climate change mitigation, adaptation, and impacts. The economic model is a multi-sector, multi-region, computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of the global economy, with detailed treatment of energy and land use. Key functions in this position are to (1) improve the implementation of the existing model, and develop and implement new computational strategies, modeling approaches, and data analysis; (2) initiate and carry out original research, within the context of CGE modeling, in the assessment of climate change impacts, particularly in the agricultural and forestry sectors; and (3) collaborate on climate change research with group members and other scientists at NCAR and in the broader scientific community, including economists collaborating with the IAM research group.

The successful applicant will join a growing integrated assessment modeling group that includes both social and natural scientists (see NCAR is committed to expanding its capacity in the IAM field, and the group has an organizational home among both natural scientists modeling the climate system and land cover change (Climate and Global Dynamics division, CGD), as well as within a cross-cutting program fostering collaborations across disciplines (Integrated Science Program, ISP). The IAM group aims to address key aspects of the climate change issue by developing and applying new socio-economic models that leverage NCAR's status as a world-leading climate modeling center. The economic model is one component of NCAR's integrated assessment model known as iPETS (see

The position requires advanced knowledge of CGE modeling, including data requirements/analysis and numerical approaches to model implementation; programming skills and substantial experience in the GAMS programming language; knowledge of key issues related to the economics of climate change; skill in organizing research and development projects; and the ability to develop and maintain a nationally recognized publication record.
