Candidates must have a distinguished record of public service in government, non-profit, or for-profit organizations and must be able to mentor master's students in introductory and advanced policy projects for real-world clients, as well as to teach core or elective courses on major policy issues or leadership skills. Training or professional experience in rigorous policy analysis and an advanced post-graduate degree are required (Ph.D. preferred). Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation's top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous training in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on the acquisition of leadership skills and an understanding of the changing context of public policy in the 21st century. The core faculty includes economists, political scientists, psychologists, and historians, enriched by professors of practice who bring real-world policymaking expertise to the classroom. The School currently offers the MPP degree, as well as an accelerated MPP program and an undergraduate major in public policy and leadership. The School also offers dual degree programs with the Darden School of Business (MPP/ MBA), the School of Law (MPP/ JD) and other UVA professional schools. Last fall, the Batten School moved into its permanent home, Garrett Hall, which underwent a multi-million dollar renovation and is located adjacent to Thomas Jefferson's historic Lawn.
