The Housing and Civil Enforcement Section of the Civil Rights Division, United States Department of Justice is seeking an economist to serve in its fair lending unit. The Housing Section enforces the Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act which together prohibit systemic discrimination by financial institutions in all types of lending. The economist works with staff attorneys and other professionals, to identify and investigate potential illegal discrimination, including through the development and estimation of econometric models and other statistical analysis, the manipulation and evaluation of large databases, and the identification of statistical patterns consistent with discrimination and calculation of any monetary damages. Candidates should: be able to conduct multiple investigations and work independently or as part of a team; have a background in applied econometrics or a related field; have experience conducting statistical analyses using statistical software in an area related to lending discrimination; and be able to communicate clearly.
