Full Text of JOE Listing:
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a non-profit national environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and online activists, is now accepting applications for a two-year, full-time Sustainable Livestock Economics Fellow.

The Fellow will work with a diverse team of advocates and scientists to help assess externalized costs of conventional livestock systems and evaluate opportunities for transitioning to more sustainable alternatives. The Fellow will be supported by NRDC's Science Center which seeks to expand NRDC's scientific capabilities and increase support for the role of science in public policy.

Position Description

The environmental and social impacts of America's industrial livestock production system are well documented. Impacts include habitat degradation and biodiversity loss, erosion, water and air pollution, and dependency on antibiotics which results in reduced efficacy of live-saving medicines.

NRDC lawyers, scientists, and policy specialists are working to curb the worst impacts from animal agriculture, while creating incentives to reward producers who demonstrate environmental stewardship. The Fellow will contribute to this work by: (1) conducting original research of costs and benefits of traditional and alternative livestock systems; (2) developing lay-language interpretations of existing literature for policy makers, large retailers, and the general public; and (3) advising the development of campaign priorities and materials.

The Fellow will develop one or more peer-reviewed, published articles and seek out opportunities to disseminate this work and increase awareness of sustainable livestock production models. Areas of research may include:

--Cost-benefit analysis for transitioning away from animal agriculture's dependency on antibiotics.
--Externalities imposed by industrial animal agriculture.
--Economic barriers and incentives for scaling up alternative production systems.

NRDC seeks a PhD economist, with experience in cost-benefit analysis and in valuing natural systems or other harder-to-quantify endpoints. Expertise in agricultural systems, particularly livestock, is preferred but not required. The successful applicant will have excellent writing skills, enjoy working on an interdisciplinary team with people from different professional backgrounds, and thrive in a fast paced environment.
Application Instructions:

Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume and writing sample to: NRDC is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
