Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in teaching and research, and has been at the international forefront of academic scholarship for many years. Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Contemporary China Studies

Applications are invited for appointment as Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Contemporary China Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, from as soon as possible, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of a tenured appointment.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is a leading institution of higher education in Hong Kong and Asia. The recent QS World University Rankings 2011 has ranked HKU social sciences in the top 23 among some 200 universities in the world and in the top four in Asia. The Faculty comprises five core departments and a series of research centres spanning the disciplines of Geography, Politics and Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work and Social Administration, and Sociology. Applicants can map into any of the existing disciplines in the Faculty, but must have a Ph.D. degree and a strong record of teaching and research accomplishments in the domain of contemporary China studies. The Faculty will soon launch a new undergraduate programme majoring in China Social Science with the aim of meeting the growing interests in social, economic, cultural as well as political development in contemporary China among students from different parts of the world. The appointee is expected to lead the development of the curriculum; liaise with the participating units from different departments; and develop partnerships with collaborating institutions over mainland China. He/She is expected to coordinate and teach courses of the China Social Science programme; and to strengthen the Faculty's research portfolio in contemporary China Studies. The post is open to different fields of study in Social Sciences, but the following ones are of special relevance: Social and Political Development, Urban and Regional Governance, Development Studies, Political Economy, and Cultural Studies.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience will be offered. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as leave, and medical benefits. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
