The Africa Rice Center (WARDA) is looking for a highly qualified Post-doctoral Fellow (IRS 004/RD/PL2/07) to join its Impact Assessment team. The focus of the Impact Assessment research is on providing information on the impact of rice technologies and policies on various household and community welfare and environmental outcomes including poverty, food security, nutrition, health and biodiversity. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Post-doctoral fellow will be stationed at WARDA's temporary headquarters in Cotonou, Benin and will work under the supervision of WARDA's Impact Assessment Economist. He/she will assist in economic impact assessments of rice technologies on the livelihoods and welfare of rice farmers and communities and on the economies of sub-Saharan African countries, including methodology development, survey design and implementation, data analysis, write-up of research and donor reports, and publication in international refereed journals. The Post-doctoral fellow is also expected to contribute to the development of individual and institutional capacity in Impact Assessment of NARES in the region through sharing of experiences and expertise. In particular, he or she will be spending a significant amount of his or her time backstopping the NARS economists in the implementation of their impact studies. REQUIREMENTS: Candidates should have: (1) a PhD degree in Agricultural Economics or in Economics (2) demonstrated skills in quantitative economics analysis with a focus on microeconomics, (3) Familiarity with the econometrics of social programs evaluation ; (4) good knowledge of econometrics and demonstrated skills in using standard econometric packages such as STATA, GAUSS, S+, etc (Some knowledge of programming in STATA will be a plus); 5) demonstrated experience in implementing household surveys; (6) proficiency in written and spoken French or English with a good working knowledge of the other. DURATION OF THE APPOINTMENT: The contract for the position will be for a two-year term (2007-2009).
