CeMENT: Mentoring for Junior Faculty

This workshop is aimed at mentoring junior faculty at institutions where promotion is primarily based on research output, with a central focus on addressing the unique challenges that women face at the beginning of their careers.

The workshop will consist of a two-day program, directly after the ASSA meetings in Chicago.  The ASSA meetings end at 3pm on Sunday, January 8th; the workshop begins with dinner that night and ends at 3pm on Tuesday, January 10th.  The AEA will pay for participants’ lodging and food during the workshop, but attendees must arrange their own transportation.

As in the previous programs, participants will be arranged into small groups based on their research area and will interact with each other and with senior (tenured) faculty mentors.  Group members and mentors discuss and offer feedback on the participants’ research.

In addition, we hold a number of larger how-to sessions on topics such as: publishing, developing a tenure case, writing a grant, effective and efficient teaching, conferences and networking, and work/life balance.

How to apply:

Applications will be accepted until October 1, 2011.  There are two steps in the application process; both can be done electronically.  First, complete the online application at the website below.  The application is simple and should take you around 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

National Online Application Form

Second, send an email to cswepmentoring@vanderbilt.edu.  In the subject line of the message, indicate that you are applying for the national workshop in Chicago.  You should attach two documents to the email.

  1. A C.V., which shows the date you received your PhD, your research area, and your current position.  Label the file with your name, lastname_cv.
  2. A one-page statement describing your research.  We will use this statement to arrange groups of faculty with similar research interests.  Label the file with your name, lastname_statement.

Applications must be complete by October 1, 2011.  You will be informed of your participation status by early November.

We are excited about the opportunity to continue CSWEP’s tradition of mentoring junior faculty.  We hope you will apply, and look forward to seeing you at one of our workshops.
