Laura Kalambokidis of University of Minnesota reviews "The Political Economy of Agricultural Price Distortions" by Kym Anderson. The EconLit Abstract of the reviewed work begins: Thirteen papers explain the historical origins of governments' distortions to agricultural markets and the patterns of intervention that have evolved over the past half century. Papers discuss agricultural distortion patterns since the 1950s; the political economy of agricultural distortions—the literature to date; special interests versus the public interest in policy determination; Anglo–French trade, 1689–1899—agricultural trade policies, alcohol taxes, and war; agricultural protection growth in Europe, 1870–1969; determinants of U.S. farm policies; agricultural distortions in the transition economies of Asia and Europe; agricultural price distortions and stabilization; why governments tax or subsidize agricultural trade; the impacts of ideology, inequality, lobbying, and public finance; agricultural trade interventions in Africa; trade agreements and trade barrier volatility; and constitutional rules and agricultural policy outcomes. Anderson is George Gollin Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide. Index.
