The American Economic Review: Submission Guidelines

Submission Policy

Any paper submitted to the American Economic Review should NOT be under consideration for publication at another journal. All submitted papers must also represent original work, and should fully reference and describe all prior work on the same subject and compare the submitted paper to that work.

Submission fees must be paid by credit card at the time of submission. We are unable to review manuscripts that have been previously rejected by the AER. The AER reserves the right to reject papers without review.

Authors should also indicate, either in their cover letter or in the title page referred to below or both, whether the research reported in their paper was the result of a for-pay consulting relationship or if they or their employer has a financial interest in the topic of the paper which might constitute a conflict of interest.

Source information for tables, figures, maps, photos, and other artwork should be mentioned in the captions. For material that is copyrighted, you must obtain a letter of permission from the copyright holder. In the US, Canada, EU countries, and Japan, copyright is automatically granted for photos to the owner(s) of the photos.

Submission Fees

AEA members pay only $100, so join the AEA now and save!

Members of the AEA: $100

Nonmembers: $200

Members working in certain low-income countries are permitted lower fees.

Submission payments through the electronic system must be made by credit card.  If you have any questions, contact the Editorial Office at info@aerjournal.org or call 412-432-2300.

Submission Guidelines

READ GUIDELINES THOROUGHLY.  PAPERS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED IF THEY DO NOT FOLLOW STYLE GUIDELINES.

Papers should be submitted electronically to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aer

Upon receipt of the paper, a confirmation email will be sent electronically. The submission is not complete if a confirmation email has not been received.
  1. All manuscripts must be formatted with 1.5 line spacing and must not exceed 40 pages (50-page limit applies to double-spaced manuscripts). This limit includes reference lists, figures, and tables.

  2. Manuscripts must use 12-point font. Margins must be one inch top, bottom, and sides. Please use Times New Roman or similar font. These font, margin, and line-spacing requirements also apply to reference lists and tables.

Note: If you are a LaTeX user, please use the "review mode" in our templates to format your manuscript:
    http://www.aeaweb.org/templates/latex_templates.zip
    http://www.aeaweb.org/templates/sw_templates.zip

  3. You must include the words "Not for Publication" at the beginning of any lengthy appendix. The 40-page limit can be exceeded by an appendix if it is clearly marked as such.

  4. Please submit an anonymous PDF of your manuscript. Also, submit a title page with each author's name and contact information. We also request that you indicate the institutions and/or grant numbers of any financial support you have received for your research. This title page should also personally acknowledge individuals who have contributed criticism to earlier drafts of your submission. Please upload this title page as its own PDF, separate from the anonymous manuscript. This page will not be sent to the referees.

  5. Authors should not be identified anywhere in the manuscript. This includes links to datasets or appendices that are posted on the individual Web pages of the author(s).

  6. Remove all acknowledgements from the manuscript.

  7. Include an abstract of 100 or fewer words.

  8. Fully reference all prior work on the same subject and compare the submitted paper to that work.

  9. All data used in analysis must be clearly and precisely documented.

  10. All data used in analysis must be made available to any researcher for purposes of replication. See Data Availability Policy.

  11. Any requests for an exemption from the data availability policy must be made in the cover letter when the paper is first submitted.

  12. A reference list is required. See Sample References for the correct format. Be sure to cite papers with names and titles as they appear in the published article.

  13. If your paper is selected for publication, appendices longer than five pages will only appear on our Web site and not in the printed journal.
