American Economic Journal: Microeconomics: Submissions

Submission Policy

Any paper submitted to the AEJ: Microeconomics should NOT be under consideration for publication at another journal. All submitted papers must also represent original work, and should fully reference and describe all prior work on the same subject and compare the submitted paper to that work.

Submission fees must be paid by credit card at the time of submission. We are unable to review manuscripts that have been previously rejected by the AEJ: Microeconomics. The AEJ: Microeconomics reserves the right to reject papers without review.

Authors should also indicate, either in their cover letter or in the title page referred to below or both, whether the research reported in their paper was the result of a for-pay consulting relationship or if they or their employer has a financial interest in the topic of the paper which might constitute a conflict of interest.

Source information for tables, figures, maps, photos, and other artwork should be mentioned in the captions. For material that is copyrighted, you must obtain a letter of permission from the copyright holder. In the US, Canada, EU countries, and Japan, copyright is automatically granted for photos to the owner(s) of the photos.

Submission Fees

AEA members pay only $100, so join the AEA now and save!

Submission Instructions

Papers should be submitted electronically to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aej-micro

Upon receipt of the paper, a confirmation email will be sent electronically. The submission is not complete if a confirmation email has not been received. When preparing your materials for submission, please keep in mind that this journal is printed in black and white; color materials must be translated to grayscale before publication.
  1. Manuscripts should not exceed 50 pages double-spaced. This limit includes reference lists, figures, and tables.

  2. Manuscripts must use 12-point font. Margins must be one inch top, bottom, and sides. Please use Times New Roman or similar font. These font, margin, and line-spacing requirements also apply to reference lists and tables.

Note: If you are a LaTeX user, please use the "review mode" in our templates to format your manuscript:
    http://www.aeaweb.org/templates/latex_templates.zip
    http://www.aeaweb.org/templates/sw_templates.zip

  3. You must include the words “Not for Publication” at the beginning of any lengthy appendix. The 50-page limit can be exceeded by an appendix if it is clearly marked as such.

  4. Please submit a PDF of the manuscript. Also, submit a title page with each author's name and contact information, and including any acknowledgements that have appeared in previous working papers as a separate PDF. This page will not be sent to the referees.

  5. Authors should not be identified anywhere in the paper. This includes links to data sets or appendices that are posted on the individual Web pages of the author(s).

  6. Remove all acknowledgements.

  7. Include an abstract of 100 or fewer words.

  8. Fully reference all prior work on the same subject and compare the submitted paper to that work.

  9. All data used in analysis MUST be clearly and precisely documented.

  10. All data used in analysis MUST be made available to any researcher for purposes of replication. See Data Availability Policy.

  11. Any requests for an exemption from the data availability policy MUST be made in the cover letter when the paper is first submitted.

  12. A reference list is required. See Sample References for the correct format. Be sure to cite papers with names and titles as they appear in the published article.

AEJ: Microeconomics will publish twice during 2009 (February, August) and quarterly thereafter (February, May, August, November).

The Economist names AEJ Micro Board of Editor Marc Merlitz one of eight best young economists. He is cited as "a pioneer of the 'new, new trade theory.'" To identify the best young economists, the magazine asked leading authorities for their recommendations.
